Pischiano is situated in eastern Tuscany where
the countryside is greener and more varied than it is in western
Tuscany, which given the proximity of Florence and Siena also
tends to be rather busier with more visitors. In short one
is less likely to encounter foreign visitors although the
nearest town, Sansepolcro (five miles away from Pischiano)
is of considerable interest to those interested in fine art
because it was the home of Piero della Francesca and a number
of his most important works can be seen in the area.
Sansepolcro itself is a delightful old town
with a distinctive identity and some excellent shops and restaurants
but there are also some other delightful small towns, villages
and places of interest close by such as Anghiari, Monterchi,
Citerna and La Verna which make pleasant half day or early
evening excursions.
Local activities available include cycling,
fishing, horse riding, mountain biking, sailing, ski, swimming,
tennis, walking, water skiing, wind surfing and bird watching.
Pischiano itself is a good base for walking and bird watching
in this area of the Apennines. A number of walks of varying
difficulty start at the house while the local bird life, (night
jars, hoopoes, kites and owls amongst others) has been known
to thrill birders.
The local village has two restaurants,
one the highly regarded but reasonably priced traditional
Tuscan Trattoria da Vasco, the other the Calisto which serves
very traditional honest to goodness Tuscan food.
